Informations for Refugees arriving in Lesvos

Welcome!
You just arrived on the greek island called Lesvos.
Lesvos is a big island. (Lesvos map)

The capital city where the port is located is called Mitilini

The distance from here to Mitilini is ..... kilometer(s)
By foot it takes .... hours to get there.
By car .....

A ferry service runs from Mitilini to Athens daily at .... a.m./p.m.
To buy a ticket for the ferry you will need documents.
A One-Way-Ticket costs minimum 29 Euros in the off season.
You can get a ticket without having documents from certain people but
they will charge you much more (50 - 150 Euros).

While entering the ferry you might be controled and arrested because you don't have
the documents required.

To receive a document you need to register youself with the
police.
First they will arrest you, make some health examinations at the hospital and then they will bring you to a detention centre (prison) with a lot
of other people.
But within a few days (maximum 3 months) you will be able to leave with the
documents necessary for you to get to Athens.

That document unfortunalty is not a residence permit for Greece.
You can apply for asylum in prison and also later. In this case you will receive a temporary residence permit which is valid for 6 months and renewable. Unfortunately the asylum recognition rate is very low in Greece. Ask a lawyer about more information.
The paper you get in the detention centre is a deportation order, which says that you have to leave within 30 days the country. But it is not possible to travel with this paper out of Greece.
If you get caught after overstaying these 30 days, you might get
arrested again, this time for a longer period (3-18 month).

When you go to Athens by ferry you will arrive at a port called Piraeus.
From there you have to take a train to Omonia or Attiki station. It costs not more than 1 Euro.

On the Lesvos Island you can find people, who will support you. There
are groups that can offer you food, fresh clothes und first aid.

The population on Lesvos island generelly want to help but they might be afraid.
Ask for help if you don't know how to proceed.
